It is practiced (although very quietly) by a great many other schools. And it is not a new practice, having seen it done to some degree for over 40 years. The question people are missing is that it is the NBA and constant practice of players jumping from college to the pros after a year or two that really creates this situation. Make sure players need to stay in school for at least 3 years and a lot of this "over-recruiting" will disappear. Coaches and schools have invested huge amounts of time and money recruiting many of these players and with nothing to stop them from going pro at any time after one year puts the coaches and schools in a very tough predicament. Remember Coach Crean has stuck with players that have had debilitating injuries that have kept them on the bench for extended periods of time and not forced them out. (Derrick Elston and Maurice Creek) That was a practice that was sometimes used years ago, again fairly quietly. Just as many people seem to think there is some bottomless pocketbook that they should be using to pay athletes, many people seem to think there is a bottomless pile of cash to keep recruiting players and a bottomless supply of talent out there. You only need look at the coaches released recently at the D1 level to see that coach's jobs are far from secure so taking a year off so that you don't over recruit and then lose a top tier player or two in one year is risky. Neither Universities nor their fans are very forgiving when it comes to wins and losses not matter what they say about "being fair" and being "truly honest" with recruits. Some recruits and potential recruits may get upset with the practice but the best high school players will push a school down on their list if they can't keep winning too.

Re: Indiana’s Scholarship Approach: Fair or Foul?

Cary, if you don't want to read the article, I suggest the back button. When your backcourt is outscored something like 38-0, it's obvious there was a problem. As for the Syracuse zone, Michigan hit enough 3-point shots to stay in the game. IU didn't, and that comes back at least in part to the height of the guards. Finally, there''s no way Zeller won't go in the top 10 of the draft; insider projections say he'll go in the second five, that he's read to make the jump, and that his long-range projection is very good as soon as he learns to play facing the basket.

Re: A Closer Look: Syracuse, Crean and Zeller

Cody should have shot the ball from 5 feet out all year but drove to the basket with shoulder down hoping to get a call and did not most of the 2nd half of the season. The difference was not entry passes but what the recipient did with the ball. Rather than turn and face to shoot or draw defenders and pass to open mates, Zeller and Watford and Oladipo put the ball on the floor which is exactly the wrong thing to do. Crean could see this happening but was unable to get his team to do otherwise. Either stupid players...I dont think so.....or poor coaching. I might note that Mich played at times with Spike and Trey on the floor. No taller than Yogi and Jordy. Poor preparation led to poor execution. That is coaching.

Re: A Closer Look: Syracuse, Crean and Zeller

I think everyone needs to shut their mouth about Cody's play. Crean had a game plan and it didn't work and he still didn't change it. He told Cody to drive right into the Syracuse defense and even went as far as telling Zeller not settle for that 15-foot jumper that we all know he can 9/10 times. How are you going to blame Cody for doing what he was told? But I do agree that Sheehey should have started over Yogi or Hulls because of the size and strength of the Syracuse guards. And Cody doesn't need to develop an outside shot. If any of you watched him play in high school you would know that his outside game is one of his biggest strengths. I just don't think Crean used Cody to the best of his abilities. I understand that we needed a post presence but that doesn't mean he can't shoot.

Re: A Closer Look: Syracuse, Crean and Zeller

I believe our hopes and expectations were to at least have a Final Four run considering the team we had coming back and Victor's great play this year. We tend to want to focus on the Syracuse game, but it started way before that. I think we were all disappointed with the Minnesota game and had a hard time recapturing that high level offensive execution at any time after that. Sure the win at M State was great, but when you looked at the OSU loss at home and Wisconsin in the B1G Tourn, it seemed to me that our best basketball was behind us. Winning and losing always comes down to making shots and not turning the ball over. We didn't do very well with either one and it cost us.

Re: A Closer Look: Syracuse, Crean and Zeller

TC is a very good to great Coach. No Coach is perfect, but TC has a couple of problem issues: 1. TC definitely gets to close to some of his Seniors and plays them regardless of the situation. Jordan Hulls this year and Verdell Jones last year. Indiana would not have made the sweet 16 last year if Verdell did not get injured and Will entered the lineup. Jordan is much better than Verdell, but he needed to be the 6th man this year. 2. As far as the NCAA Tournament this year, Indiana peaked too early and they were struggling entering the Tournament. Indiana did not handle being the pursued this year versus being the pursuer last year. TC will learn, he is still the right Coach for Indiana, and he will figure out how to play the best players even if he has to upset a Senior he has respect for. The key issue that is alarming is why Indiana peaked way to early and could not sustain it. As far as Syracuse, Indiana only won one game this year against a half court physical team, that was their Achilles heal.

Re: A Closer Look: Syracuse, Crean and Zeller

While I think "Banner or bust" is a ridiculous goal for any program in any year, I think most were expecting a final 4 appearance. Cody's rebounding did improve this year (at least the numbers say they did). He was still inconsistent and unwilling to take the 10-15 foot spot up jumper (unlike the Louisville big man, who hit many in the tourney yet isn't even talked about in the same breath as Cody). Yogi/Jordy combo against Cuse was obviously a no-win, I think it took most of us about 3 possessions early in half #1 to sense that we had a problem against that zone. In the end, let's not overlook the outright B1G championship, but aside from that, we won 2 more games (29/27) than last yr, lost to Wisky twice again, didn't make it to Sunday in the B1G tourney...aside from the B1G regular season trophy(which I don't mean to downplay) we didn't accomplish a lot more than last year's team (and we feasted on cupcakes during Nov/Dec...once we got to B1G and tourneys, our scoring output dropped quite a bit). Next year will be an average season by old standards, may be tough to accept after this yr's expectations. But life goes on, no one go jump off any cliffs.

Re: A Closer Look: Syracuse, Crean and Zeller

Dogging on Crean is besides the point. We missed too many 3-pointers, unlike Michigan against Syracuse. When a team that shoots 42.7% behind the arc hits only 3 of 15 (20%), we ain't going to win against a 2-3 zone. The PLAYERS blew it, not the coach. Jordy should have shot 9 times, and if he'd made his usual 4 or 5, we win the game. Case closed. Stop blaming Crean. If Steve Alford had missed just ONE of his 3-pointers in 1987, we wouldn't have won that game. Would you have blamed Bob Knight for the loss? I personally think coach-bashing is not very productive.

Re: A Closer Look: Syracuse, Crean and Zeller

Yogi played way too much in second half -- he struggled with playing under control -- but ultimately, Indiana didn't make shots, so they didn't have a chance. Nine missed FTs, 3-for-15 from three (Hulls 0-for-6). They had their opportunities, just didn't execute at high level and got outmuscled inside. Would lineup tweaks helped that -- maybe, but in the end, they just played poorly against a team that played well....

Re: A Closer Look: Syracuse, Crean and Zeller

I would give that Big Ten title back to have played last night...even on the losing end! The length of Syracuse killed us at the guard but too often Watford, Zeller, and Hulls down the end...were lost! I am still upset and think IU underachieved. The biggest mystery to me remains why Zeller would not just shoot the ball 8-10 feet out and why Hulls disappeared? The passion and fire were not there either and I would have thought it would be. Maybe a lack of leadership I think Will will provide next year. With Zeller IU is top 5 and without...top 20 or 25. Nice write up!

Re: A Closer Look: Syracuse, Crean and Zeller

I agree with the assessment about Jordy, Yogi and Cody. I don't think TC is a great X & O's coach, who has a great energy on the sideline. We know Cody can shoot the ball, why didn't TC have him turn and shoot at the free throw line? This would have forced the guards to sag in and Cody could have popped the ball out for an open jumper!

Cody is 7ft tall and should have average at least 10 rebounds a game, period!!! He needs to finish what he started and get to the final 4!
